About Us

Our Story

After the conclusion of the Civil War in 1865, Andrew Marshall and J.H. Bruce opened a small book bindery in the heart of Nashville, Tennessee. Through a fire, flood and both World Wars, Marshall & Bruce has stood the test of time, growing to become one of the nation’s leading printing and fulfillment companies.

A humble founding in 1865

With a company history dating as far back as ours, we’ve seen and pioneered tremendous change within the printing industry. Opening our doors with equipment valuing at less than $300, Marshall & Bruce grew steadily over the next several decades. After a fire destroyed the plant in 1895, the company was forced to rebuild from the ground-up, returning stronger than ever. Before they knew it, Marshall & Bruce had evolved from a simple book-bindery into a commercial printing powerhouse, adopting the slogan “We Print Anything.”

Trailblazers, Marshall and Bruce

An article written in Printing Trade News in 1911 stated that founders Andrew Marshall and J. H. Bruce kept their employees on board as long as they did their jobs faithfully and showed interest in the welfare of their fellow employees. The author also stated that they had possibly the most honest and loyal employees in the United States, so much so that one employee named his two sons Bruce and Marshall.

Torch passed to the Smith family

Nearly 120 years after Marshall and Bruce’s founding, Robert L. Smith acquired the company. Between Nashville’s central location and rising popularity, Smith saw tremendous potential for Marshall & Bruce to expand from a community name into a nationwide enterprise. Forty years later, the company’s legacy is being carried out and taken to new heights by the second and third generations of Smiths.
